A lab AI maturity model helps organizations move from passive documentation and shadow AI workarounds to governed AI support inside scientific workflows. An AI lab notebook (AILN) is a third-generation ELN that embeds science-aware assistance inside governed workflows so reasoning and decisions can be captured with the experimental record.

The three-stage maturity curve

Across labs, AI adoption rarely arrives as a single coordinated leap. It tends to move through a progression, shaped by urgency at the bench and the limits of existing tools.

Passive lab: The electronic lab notebook (ELN) functions mainly as a system of record. It documents work reliably, but it does not consistently support interpretation or next-step decisions inside the workflow. Only 7% can configure assays independently, and only 5% can analyze data without specialist help.

Shadow lab: Scientists use public generative AI tools alongside the ELN to summarize, interpret, and plan. Speed improves in the moment, but reasoning shifts outside governed environments, fragmenting the record and increasing oversight risk.

Active lab: Intelligence moves inside the notebook environment. A third-generation ELN, or science-aware AI notebook, supports interpretation where the work is documented and retains reasoning with the record so it can be reviewed, reused, and trusted.

What makes an active lab “active”

The difference is not whether AI can write fluent text. It is whether the lab can take governed action inside the workflow, with the reasoning retained alongside the experimental record.

Public generative AI tools are valuable general-purpose assistants. But they remain generalist tools. They are not embedded in validated workflows, they do not automatically carry experimental context, and they do not reliably write decision logic back into the system of record.

In an active lab, workflow capabilities are built into the environment where the work happens. In practice, that usually shows up as three layers of capability, with increasing control.

  • Recommend: Retrieve relevant previous work, summarize, compare conditions, generate visualizations and propose interpretations, with clear links back to source data.
  • Execute within guardrails: Trigger approved analyses, populate records and draft protocols or SOP steps, with audit logging and role-based controls.
  • Orchestrate with explicit human approval: Initiate workflow steps that touch execution only through sign-off, with validation boundaries and clear override.

Trust sits on top of that foundation. Scientists do not need to be “sold” on AI as an idea, but they do need to be able to audit what it produced and why. In the research, 81% say they would only trust AI suggestions if they can review the underlying evidence. That is why transparency matters, not as a slogan, but as a design requirement.

The same pragmatism shows up in what scientists want first. The top near-term priorities were analysis and interpretation (52%), better connectivity across instruments and tools (45%), and AI-driven SOP execution directly from protocols (79%).

How labs move from passive to active

Passive labs should fix the flow. Identify where the ELN creates queues, manual exports, and repeat work, then pilot interpretation support inside the governed workflow so results feed back into planning.

Shadow labs should bring high-value use cases into view. Identify where unmanaged accounts are being used and for which questions, then pull those use cases into a governed environment so reasoning is retained with the experimental record.

Labs moving toward active should focus on the foundation. Prioritize connectivity, context, and auditability, then expand capabilities in layers, with explicit review where it is required.
