The term BioBanking has emerged as the term to describe not only sample management, but the clinical and other data associated with the sample. The BioBankCentral website offers the following description of a BioBank:

"A BioBank, also known as a BioRepository, is a place that collects, stores, processes and distributes biological materials and the data associated with those materials. Typically, those “biological materials” are human BioSpecimens – such as tissue or blood - and the “data” are the clinical information pertaining to the donor of that BioSpecimen. A BioBank can also include tissues from other animals, cell and bacterial cultures, and even environmental samples."

The tracking and management of this data can be critical to not only clinical laboratories, but to R&D laboratories. Exemplar LIMS was designed to provide complete tracking of samples, their location and the key attributes of the samples that each customer needs to track. With Exemplar LIMS BioBanking, laboratory personnel can:

  • Generate sample barcodes, print barcode labels and scan barcoded samples for quick and accurate entry into the system.
  • Track any sample type (blood, DNA, etc.) and container type (test tube, plate, etc.)
  • Track sample locations within storage units, shelves, boxes and racks.
  • Track unlimited customer-defined attributes of the sample, including clinical or phenotypic values.
  • Attach documents of any type to samples (consent forms, image files, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Define and Track complex sample protocols
  • Ensure sample-level access control and automatic electronic auditing of all changes
  • Facilitate regulatory compliance with FDA Part 11/GxP/HTA

Among the key benefits of Exemplar LIMS is its open ended design, which allows our customers to easily add new fields of any type to the samples they want to track. These new fields are easily added via a wizard and require no programming. All new fields are immediately available to end users and are completely backward compatible with existing data in the LIMS and fully upgradable to future LIMS releases. This ensures that no matter what clinical or phenotypic values our customers want to track over time, that Exemplar LIMS can support them with no consulting or programming while maintaining compliance with key standards. Additionally, complex workflows can be created within minutes to track sample related protocols.
